- Hello, I'm Dr. Brant Hulsebus, chiropractor here in Rockford, Illinois. This is our weekly podcast of "Ask the Chiropractor". If you have a question about chiropractic or chiropractic care, I always recommend you ask a chiropractor, not anyone else. Just like if you had a question about your teeth, you would never ask an OBGYN or a podiatrist about your teeth, you would ask your dentist. All too often, we see that people ask the wrong type of doctor about chiropractic care, get the wrong answer, and have to suffer more than they should, when chiropractic care could've helped them a long time ago. So, we come out here every week and we answer a question that somebody might ask me. Now today, I had a question asked to me by a very young patient. The very, very young patient wanted to know a simple question. This time of year, they wanna know does Santa Claus go to the chiropractor?(chuckles) Or, does Santa Claus need the chiropractor? And for fun, the answer is yes. Here is my little Santa hat. There we go. Yes, Santa goes to the chiropractor. Why does Santa need to go to the chiropractor? Well, this time of year, and every time of the year, we talk about the things that make your spine go out or the reason why people seek chiropractic care. And it's always the same three answers, thoughts, traumas, and toxins. As Dr. Palmer put it, chemical, physical, and emotional stressors. So this time of year, does Santa have any of those things going on? Well, of course, Santa has got a lot of emotional stressors. Santa's got a lot of deadlines. He's got a lot of toys to get made, a lot of elves to manage and get things done. So, Santa's racing against the clock to get everything done. So, that creates a lot of emotional stress for Santa, I'm sure of it! So, Santa gets really tight between his shoulders and really does have a hard time sleeping, a hard time relaxing, because of all the emotional stress Santa gets under. Next, we talk about physical stress. Does Santa Claus have any physical stress? Absolutely, I mean he has to brace on a sleigh from house to house and slide down chimney's house to house to house. And we know that he must go really fast when he does this. And I'm sure those reindeer, when they take off, it's quite a bit of jerking, back and forth on Santa's neck, almost giving him little whiplashes every time they take off in order to get that sleigh moving. So, Santa does a lot of physical stress. And I don't know what it's like to go up a chimney, but I can't imagine going up and down a chimney, you wouldn't have to wiggle a little bit to get in and out of there, that could affect your spine, too. So, we all understand the emotional stress Santa is under and the physical stress that Santa's also under. But what about chemical stress? Is there a lot of chemical stress in Santa's life? Absolutely, because we always leave Santa cookies and stuff like that that he eats. And as we all know, sugars are hyper inflammatory. So, sugars can make us inflame more to have more aches and pains. And that would make somebody want to go to their chiropractor more. So absolutely, Santa deals with all three chemical, physical, and emotional stress this time of year, which has him come to the chiropractor. So did we take care of Santa? Santa always makes sure he sees his chiropractor to stay adjusted and make sure he stays good. So, that's what we see during the holidays. Now, for everybody else during the holiday time, where do we see you? Well, a lot of people are doing the same things. You know, traffic is a little bit more crazier, so, everybody has a little bit more emotional stress. You know, restaurants are busier, we all have a hundred different activities we're trying to attend, so we're trying to balance our schedules. So, the emotional stress can take a wear and tear on us. The other thing that we see a lot of is the fact that we are eating more treats. I know here at our clinic, our patients stop in with cookies and stuff like that, they make for us, that we share. Not only with ourselves, with other patients. So, there's a lot more of those sweets floating around nowadays. So, the chemical stress really goes up. And not only that, but, like, going out to dinner more and stuff like that, you're just starting to eat more and you get away from your normal dietary habits. I know, for myself, I've kept salads here at the office, tried to eat those for lunch so I can at least control one good healthy meal going during the day. Then our physical stress. I know, for me, I've got four kids and with the holidays and stuff like that, we're running all around. I'm sitting in all these different choir concerts, and band concerts, and school presentations. So, the physical stress of me sitting in the bleachers more and more, it adds up. And the physical stress of us just running around and staying up later getting holiday stuff done, starts to take a toll on our bodies physically. And then, of course, you know, like I talked about the chemical, physical, and mental stress. We all understand the mental stress. Trying to make sure everybody has a perfect holiday and try to deal with our friends and our family. Trying to meet all the goals and expectations everybody puts out during in the holiday season can take a real toll on us. So, we're starting to see a lot more people coming in run down, beat up, sinusy, congested, and stuff like that. So, this is our little reminder. Not only does Santa Claus need to take care of himself this time of year, but you need to take care of yourself. too. So keep taking those vitamins, keep taking those supplements, keep getting your sleep, keep getting your rest. Don't skip your appointment with the chiropractor, it's really important that you've maintained things. Don't break down and try to heal and catch up. We should start the new year fresh and exciting. And not only that, but speaking of the new year, a lot of us want to start our New Year's resolutions and "I'm gonna be a better version of myself next year". Make sure you go see the chiropractor before you dive into those things because we can get you ready and tuned up so you don't like, go into the gym the first day and grab something and tell me how your neck hurts from here to here and you can't turn your head now. Or, you get this sharp pain down here in your lower back and you're getting this every time you twist or bend, it lights up like a Roman candle. Come in and get checked before you dive into these things and we'll help you go into 'em. Not only that, but we know lots of people that could help guide you on your journey. So, if you wanted to start taking yoga, we know some great yoga teachers. If you want to go back and start working out, we know people that could help you, you know, maybe like, for the first two months, teach you, what you should be doing and shouldn't be doing. And what we do is, we call those people, we tell 'em what we know about your spine, and we help you get started with them, knowing what we know about your spine. And they can judge and critique your exercise program to match what we know about your strengths and your weaknesses in your spine to try to avoid injuries and get maximum benefit. So, this time of year, it's a good idea to come and see your chiropractor, get tuned up, tell us about your New Year's resolution goals and stuff like that. And try to stay healthy and strong for the holidays. So, if you have any questions about chiropractic or chiropractic care, and no matter how young or old, go ahead and leave us a comment below.
